Students to Embrace Languages from Across Europe

Hello! Bonjour! Willkommen! ¡Hola! Ciao! Cześć!

Every year, the 26th of September marks the European Day of Languages. However, to broaden the remit of European Day of Languages, students at Forest & Sandridge School hold the annual International Day of Languages event. On the day, all classes are completely off-timetable, with lesson time being used to celebrate a selected country, its language, and its culture. Each class has chosen a country, from the youngest children in Seedlings (our preschool) up to year 6. The children and staff will be dressed either in traditional dress or in the colours of the national flag.

As always, we have focused on involving families as much as possible, and we will be celebrating the languages spoken within the school and the different countries and cultures that make up our school communities. This year, the different countries we are celebrating include France, Australia, Kenya, China, Wales, Poland, Ghana, Mexico, Russia, Germany, Spain, Holland, and Iceland.

Throughout the day, a variety of activities will take place, including: our preschool children cooking pancakes and tasting French food, pizza-making in year 4, and year 3 students listening to Mexican music. Students will also enjoy playing new sports and traditional games, language learning, food tasting, singing songs, and storytelling. Finally, we are delighted to have a number of parents visiting us as guests for part of the day to share their culture and enrich the children's learning.

Mrs Lewis, Languages Coordinator, said, "This event is a fantastic opportunity for our children to become immersed in a language and culture that they haven't previously been exposed to, broadening and enriching their world view.”

Being equipped with the ability to speak another language and the understanding of other cultures opens doors to lucrative jobs, exquisite culture, and mouth-watering food, and by marking the day at Forest & Sandridge School, we hope to broaden the horizons of our pupils.
